Red Candy
My boyfriend of two years, Tony, was acting more and more strange as Valentine’s Day approached. I knew he was having financial problems so I didn’t ask for much in the gift department. All I wanted from him was some of my favorite red candy to celebrate the day. I asked for some Cherry Starburst, Cinnamon Bears, Cherry Slices, Fire Cube Suckers, Cherry Tootsie Pops and some Cherry Jolly Ranchers. Real simple and easy for him to get; as well as economical.Well, on Valentine’s Day, he claims he had to work overtime so he cancels our plans to meet after work for dinner, drinks and dancing. Even though we had been planning the day for weeks, I understood because I knew he needed the money. Since our plans were canceled, he sent my red candy gift to my job via courier. I was so excited when I got my package delivered to my desk. Then oddly the courier walks only two desks over and delivers a similarly sized package to Tasha, the office’s receptionist. I knew something was up.
We both began to open our packages at the same time and time after time we both pulled out the same red candy: Cherry Tootsie Pops, Cherry Candy Sticks, Hot Tamales, Swedish Fish, etc. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I got up from my desk and calmly walked over to her, told her she had received a beautiful Valentine’s Day gift and politely asked to see her card.
Just as I suspected, she and I both got the same card with the same greeting and Tony’s signature. The only difference was the addressee. I asked Tasha if she had big plans for the night and she said that she and her new boyfriend were going out for a fancy dinner and then on to a club for salsa dancing and drinks. “Sounds wonderful” I told her.
I was hot. As I slowly ate the red candy on my desk, I plotted the best course of action, my revenge. I decided at the end of the day, I would show Tasha my red candy gift and my note from Tony and let her know about his two-timing scumbag ways. Maybe then the two of us could join Tony that night for Valentine’s Day dinner, drinks and salsa dancing. What a surprise that would be.
